Improving the efficiency of genetic test creation
A story about improving the bottom line while making healthcare more accessible
Invitae is a leader in advanced medical genetics. The core of the business for Invitae is providing genetic testing for various health conditions. In order to provide patient with results of their genetic testing, a DNA sample data must travel across 4 different professionals, starting with a variant interpreter, who analyses variants, to a lab director, who signs off on the report. The length of this process impacts the cost of the service to patients and potential profit for the company — the quicker the report can be produced, the less it costs. Therefore, it is of the critical importance that the process of genetic test creation is as streamlined as possible, taking the least amount of time while reducing the number of errors along the way. We were invited to help Invitae improve their internal product which is used to create genetic test reports.
OUR Main focus
Reduce the amount of time it takes to create a report while improving its quality
The Challenge
Although there are 4 very distinct roles involved in the report generation process, everyone used the same one-size-fits-all interface: everyone saw everything, including data that was not necessary for their particular tasks.

In addition, information presentation and workflows were not optimized for specific tasks, which resulted in more time spent per each task.

We also wanted to improve the aesthetic of the product to bring the experience closer to the consumer-grade.
The Outcome

personalized experience
Variant Interpreter
Analyzes variants and collects evidence
personalized experience
Quality Assurance
Checks the work of a variant interpreter. QC should be able to make changes or send report back to an interpreter.
personalized experience
Genetic Counselor
Makes sure interpretations are correct and writes the final report. The system suggests several interpretations to choose from while allows to write your own, thus making the report writing experience very efficient.
personalized experience
Lab Director
Signs off on reports before they are delivered to patients. The system groups similar reports into batches and allows to review and sign off on them very fast.
The Process
In-depth review and analysis of the existing product
• Examined and documented all of the existing user flows and features

• Conducted in-person one-on-one user research with several representatives of each user type

• Discovered constraints and opportunities

• Analyzed and documented our findings
Through our extensive research, we were able to gather some critical insights, such as:
Scientists tend to read everything on the screen, regardless of whether that information is needed to perform a task at hand.
The Strategy
To meet the project objectives, it was determined that every user type should have a dedicated personalized workspace with optimized flows, geared for their respective tasks (all within the single product architecture). To reduce time needed to complete each task, information layer will be optimized to show only relevant information for each user type.

The images show our high-level strategy presentation.
We created storyboards to represent core workflows of each of 4 user types. This allows to quickly view each flow at a high level and to start forming the optimal experience.

One of our general principles is to create some tangible deliverable as quickly as possible in order to confirm with the client's team that everything is moving in the right direction. The storyboards are a great conversation piece which helps to bring everyone to the same vision.
Wireframing, Prototyping, User Testing
From high level vision we move into defining concrete interfaces. With every iteration, we bring out more and more details. It's important to remember that every single deliverable serves as a discussion element with client's team to ensure that we're moving in the right direction.
Iteration after iteration
We create click-through prototypes and test with users from each representative group as often as possible. Adjustments are made after each round of testing. This process is what ensures the product will meet its objectives.
Visual Design and Component Design
Using Invitae brand guidelines we created a design system that unifies the look & feel while allowing for all the specific use cases of each product in the family.
